Building Services Worker-Custodian

Applications are being accepted for a Building Services Worker at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography of the University of Georgia (SkIO), a multidisciplinary research institution located on the Georgia coast near Savannah, GA (www.skio.uga.edu).  This position performs manual work in a variety of cleaning and related duties in and around institute buildings and facilities.  This includes classrooms, laboratories, housing, common areas, and offices.  Work involves the performance of cleaning and minor maintenance work in an assigned building or building area.  Primary responsibility is for the effective use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for building areas and equipment.  Individual works under close supervision and follows well established routines and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Trash and recycling removal/disposal

Dusts and cleans offices and labs

Sweeps, dust mops, wet mops, scrubs, strips, restores, buffs, and waxes floors, vacuums, and performs other duties as needed to maintain the cleanliness of building floors.

Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and coordinate purchasing requests when stock get low (including paper goods)

Cleans and restocks restrooms

Set up chairs tables, and other equipment in classrooms, meeting rooms, and other public areas; handles emergency clean-ups

Other duties as assigned and appropriate.

Education and Experience

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate

High School Diploma or GED

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Ability to understand instructions

Some working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment including but not limited to a floor buffer

Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment

Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces

Ability to work long hours at manual tasks.

Ability to lift weights up to 40 pounds

Ability to work on a ladder
