Building Services Worker - Custodian (University of Georgia/Skidaway Institute)
Applications are being accepted for a Custodian at the University of Georgias Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, a multidisciplinary research and academic institution located on the Georgia coast in Savannah, GA (http://www.skio.uga.edu/). Reporting to the Director of Lands and Facilities, the Custodian is a full-time benefitted support staff position. This position performs manual work in a variety of cleaning and related duties in and around institute buildings and facilities. This includes classrooms, laboratories, housing, common areas, and offices. Work involves the performance of cleaning and minor maintenance work in an assigned building or building area. Primary responsibility is for the effective use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for building areas and equipment. Individual works under close supervision and follows well established routines and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
Trash and recycling removal/disposal
Dusts and cleans offices, labs, and conference spaces
Cleans and restocks restrooms
Sweeps, dust mops, wet mops, scrubs, strips, restores, buffs, and waxes floors, vacuums, and performs other duties as needed to maintain the cleanliness of building floors.
Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and coordinates purchasing requests when stock get low (including paper goods)
Assist in setting up chairs tables, and other equipment in classrooms, meeting rooms, and other public areas;
Handles emergency clean-ups
Other duties as assigned and appropriate.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Ability to understand instructions
Some working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment including but not limited to a floor buffer
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment
Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces
Ability to work standing long hours performing manual tasks.
Ability to lift weights up to 40 pounds
Ability to work on a ladder
