Executive Director

The Executive Director (ED) is accountable to the Board of Directors to lead, manage and accomplish the work of the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity. The ED participates with the Board in developing a vision and strategic goals for CEHFH.  The ED leads the organization in achieving these goals through developing and implementing strategic and operational plans, and integrating the work of committees, staff, partner families and volunteers into a coherent, consistent and effective program of advocacy, construction, financing and family support.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
A.  Develop and Implement Strategic Vision
Work with Board and committee chairs to develop in-depth understanding of CEHFH’s mission and the opportunities and constraints related to achieving that mission. Propose goals and strategies for growth.  Work with committee chairs and staff to design and implement action plans. Identify resources needed to achieve goals; design approaches and timelines to secure them.  Communicate approved goals and plans throughout organization.

B.  Communicate CEHFH’s Mission, Goals and Commitment
Provide strong leadership, visibility and the highest representation of the Habitat mission to the community and to HFHI and other affiliates. Communicate the HFH model of homeownership and its volunteers to groups, organizations and individuals through public speaking and presentations. Develop internal and external communication plans that make affordable housing a matter of conscience amongst the people of Chatham County.  Design ways to bring CEHFH’s message to the community, with emphasis on businesses, communities of faith and civic leadership.  Develop effective working relationships with neighborhood groups, public and private agencies concerned with affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. Lead staff in developing routines and mechanisms to ensure constant flow of communication throughout CEHFH.

C.  Manage Implementation of Strategic Plan
Consult with operational committee chairs and management staff to determine feasibility, timing and potential barriers to successfully implementing Strategic Plan. Plan for and anticipate resource needs and reallocations as needed. Negotiate on behalf of the agency with external resources including governments and private business.  Continuously monitor and report on progress toward operational goals: land acquisition, family selection and support, construction, volunteers, fundraising and the ReStore. Always adhere to Board-approved governance policies.   

D.  Design and Implement Fund-raising Plans
As CEHFH’s chief fundraiser, design and implement a diversified, proactive fundraising and marketing strategy in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Resource Development Committee.  Manage and strengthen funding relationships with local and state government funders.  Manage all facets of affiliate’s grant cycle.

E.  Recruit, Manage and Support People Implementing CEHFH’s strategy and work plans
Recruit, manage and support staff through CEHFH policies and accepted HR practices.  Determine support needs of staff and volunteers and work with Board and relevant committees to ensure that these needs are met. Lead management staff for overall supervision of CEHFH operational work. Coordinate work plans with staff and volunteers to ensure strong team dynamic and effective, continuous coverage of major activities.


F.  Ensure Accountability to Board and Funders by Establishing Procedures Consistent with Their Requirements
Participate in preparation of financial and program reports to relevant committees, the Board of Directors and outside funding and government agencies. Commit CEHFH resources with utmost integrity for maximum community impact within framework and policies established by the Board.  Develop and maintain current policy and procedure manual; recommending changes as needed.

REQUIREMENTS
This individual must understand and appreciate the mission of Habitat for Humanity International and Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity.  The candidate must have a faith commitment and servant leadership skills that are compatible with the principles and purposes of Habitat for Humanity International and Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity. Qualified candidates must demonstrate the highest level of written and verbal communication skills.  Strong public speaking and presentation skills and experience.  The candidate will have proven success in building and working in a team environment. Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment, and the ability to multi-task.  The candidate must have strong negotiating skills. This individual must be detail-oriented and able to work independently.  Must be able to deal with all kinds of individuals and remain consistent in keeping a professional demeanor.  Must have experience developing and working with major donors and be able to communicate effectively and professionally with them. Must be experienced with and comfortable taking the lead in Major Gifts aspect of fundraising and be comfortable in making “the ask”.  Must have appreciation of and experience utilizing technology to assist in achieving the goals of the organization. Must have the ability to navigate in and around home construction work sites. Must have the ability to travel when needed both within the County and to meetings both in- and out-of-state.  Must have valid driver’s license, insurance and access to a vehicle. 

EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 10 years of related experience required.  Candidate must have demonstrated independent responsibility for program management and accomplishing results, for managing at least a $1 million budget in either the for-profit or not-for-profit world.  Experience in staff management and team-building required.

EDUCATION
BA or BS required, but relevant Masters Degree preferred.
