Packaging Machine Operator/Mechanic

Summary:

Apply knowledge and skills to lead production lines and operate machines. Conducts machine setup, troubleshooting, repairs and preventive maintenance service.  The Packaging Machine Operator, under the general supervision, is responsible for the safe, efficient and continuous operation of packaging machinery.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  

1.       Prepares and sets up machinery for scheduled production runs.

2.       Oversee operations of assigned line including usage of correct materials, correct fill levels, marking and packaging.

3.       Monitor line performance including speed, fill volume, proper sealing, cap torques or other standards.

4.       Make adjustments that are needed to keep the machines operating properly and efficiently.

5.       Document production data including items produced, line speeds scrap and other required data.

6.       Track materials used, produced and returned to stock.

7.       Perform cleaning and sanitation on equipment.

8.       Insure bulk holding tanks are emptied to maximize yield.

9.       Provides repairs of production equipment during production and performs scheduled maintenance repairs of production equipment during machine service.

10.   Performs mechanic skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of packaging and production machines.

11.   Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required service.

12.   Ensures the safety, cleanliness and organization of work area.

13.   Efficiently maintains the operation of packaging machinery by monitoring codes, dates and prices.

14.   Maintains an adequate supply of roll stock and ensures all packaging materials are available for each machine. +

15.   Adjusts machine micro logic set-up as needed to maintain an efficient and low waste operation.

16.   Understands and demonstrates the necessary skills involved to efficiently operate packaging equipment in so far as, but not limited to, machine setups, changeovers, proper running, procedural adjustments, sanitation cleanup, and shutdown.

17.   Properly plans ahead for machine changeovers and efficiently changing from one product item to another.

18.   Monitors and adjusts each machine to ensure proper cut off of film and bags have proper end seals and back seals as required.

19.    Ensures machines are running at standard speeds.

20.   Monitors and checks weights and product appearance as required.

21.   Properly accounts for product run off and handles this product accordingly; sorts through and reworks all good product

22.   Keeps machines and work areas clean, wipes packaging machines off and blows down area when required to do so.

23.   Practices and adheres to appropriate safety and hygiene guidelines/procedures for safe housekeeping and personal protection.

24.   Other duties assigned by your supervisor.

Qualifications:

1.       High School Diploma or equivalent

2.       Technical training; exposure to high-speed equipment

3.       5+ years of related experience in packaging machines/production machines

4.       Prior experience on operating equipment preferred.
